Par l’agencement de ces derniers, son travail met en scène des environnements vulnérables qui permettent d’écouter, d’apprécier et de comprendre les subtilités des mondes tangibles. Maude décline ses réflexions sur la performance des matériaux et des gestes qui les animent, dans des projets qui entremêlent arts visuels et arts vivants. Par l’attention portée à la charge et aux activités des matériaux, elle observe les relations d’interdépendances visible et invisibles liant êtres humains et non-humains. À leurs propres rythmes, elles se cassent, se désagrègent, génèrent des formes imprévisibles. Au fil de mes projets, je réutilise les mêmes sculptures et matériaux, renouvelant leurs unions par l’altération de leurs formes, couleurs et textures. Mon travail émerge à partir des cycles de la matière en réaction à leurs états et à leurs possibles. La gravité organise les hasards&nbsp;se décline sous différents volets contigus. Celui présenté au Circa se nomme Les pépins de cantaloup germent dans l’empreinte du ballon, mi-aile de papillon, mi-noirceur d’une pièce sans fenêtre. Une installation in situ invite à observer les phénomènes et vitalités matériels existant dans un fragile réseau de mobiles, de bassins et de matériaux trouvés. Ces éléments, étant tous interconnectés, chaque courant d’air ou passage de visiteur affecte l’ensemble du réseau. L’installation est active, elle changera de forme tout au long de l’exposition. Une fluidité à la fois matérielle et relationnelle les unit. Leur collaboration a débuté avec des cueillettes d’objets aux abords de leurs ateliers respectifs. Tout en interrogeant le territoire jouxtant leurs lieux de création – friches de quartiers industriels, voie ferrée, terrains abandonnés, en marge – une humilité dans la recherche matérielle s’instaurait. Grappillant ce qui se présentait à eux, ce qui était là.—Par le développement d’une collection d’objets trouvés, se sont implantés différents niveaux de communication : entre gestes, matières, paroles, images poétiques et observations empiriques. À travers ces circulations fluides, une attention aux différents états matériels et immatériels sera visible dans l’espace-temps de l’installation.—Dans l’atelier, argile, tissus, bois, huile et objets trouvés agissent comme matériaux de base aux sessions de travail qui se déploient en autant de manœuvres nourrissant la rencontre. [...] Leurs explorations les ont amenés à se questionner sur la nature des objets trouvés, sur leurs charges affectives et historiques, sur leur durée de vie, sur leur mode d’utilisation et plus largement sur le cycle de la matière elle-même. C’est une posture face aux temps, à la consommation. À quel moment un objet devient-il un déchet ? Qu’est-ce qui met fin à son usage ? Le déchet est politique. Il existe dans et par une structure qui le juge inutile, remplaçable, inapte à l’usage. Agencés de manière à souligner les interactions entre le geste et la matière, ses installations et les actions qui les animent génèrent des microcosmes fragiles à regarder et à écouter. Ses assemblages se font et se défont, en phase avec des cycles propres à la matière à travers le passage du temps. Surtout, ils entrent en relation avec ce qui est déjà là — un écosystème, ses courants et ses vents, voire ses hordes d’insectes, ses colonies d’oiseaux et ses plantes. L’écoute est d’ailleurs centrale dans la pratique de l’artiste, qui se montre aussi attentive à la volonté de la matière qu’à l’éthique du geste qui la travaille. Cette attitude, adoptée dans un esprit de déhiérarchisation des êtres, implique de se prêter à un exercice de lâcher-prise. L’algue devient pierre. Comme une gravure par accumulation. Et cette pierre est celle qui a poussé dans ma main. Elle est là, elle ne fait ni mal, ni bien. Je la regarde. Juste avant de refermer ma main, je la touche avec la pulpe de mon pouce. Les gestes de Maude Arès se fondent sur la collecte, la récupération et la remise en jeu. Archivant des débris depuis les cinq dernières années, elle s’intéresse aux trajectoires, aux histoires de chocs et d’usure – réelles ou imaginées – inscrites dans les matériaux fragmentés. L’attention portée à la charge des matériaux permet d’interroger la manière dont les mouvements et actions des êtres – humains ou non humains – s’influencent. L’exposition présente une installation mettant en scène un univers minuscule composé d’une collection d’objets trouvés, voire brisés, ainsi qu’une série de petites sculptures précaires et longilignes nommées outils-mystère. Au cours de l’exposition, Arès actionne ces objets de petite taille par des jeux d’équilibre et de déplacement. Les outils-mystère deviennent alors des extensions du corps de l’artiste, permettant des manipulations lentes, périlleuses et hasardeuses des matériaux exposés. Simultanément, l’artiste sonore Simon Labbé amplifie les sons délicats des matériaux. Bris, effritement, rétrécissement, union, emmêlement : l’attention est ici concentrée sur les relations, les sons, les mouvements et les transformations de la matière.
